During the 2nd World War the news media played a large part in telling the general population how the war was going on all fronts and in each theater of operatioins.  Just about everyone had a relative or knew someone that was serving during the war and the news helped them follow what was going on.  Most Major news papers and periodicals had correspondents overseas and many of these men and women worked not only for their own paper but a few of the news wires such as the International New Services, United Press and the Associated Press.

Many of the correspondents has started in journalism in the 1930's and cut their teeth on the Spanish Civil War.  During the Spanish Civil War the start of what we think of as modern reporting began.  Reporters/Photojournalist went to the front to get the story themsleves or they interviewed the soldiers as they came off the front line.  The reporters/photojournalist would then travel back to their tent or billet a few miles behind the lines and take their notes and type up a story or develop their film.  Once done the article or photo's would be sent back via wire, radio or phone.
